Kedareswara Temple, Balligavi
Where Stone Speaks the Language of the Hoysalas.
About Us
The Kedareswara Temple is a 12th-century Hoysala-style temple located at Balligavi, in Shikaripura taluk, Shivamogga district. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was built in 1060 CE by the Chalukya king Vinayaditya and later developed by the Hoysalas.
It is a classic example of trikuta architecture (triple shrine), richly adorned with detailed sculptures and carvings. The temple’s walls depict mythological stories and intricate floral designs, showcasing the mastery of Hoysala artisans.
Balligavi itself was a historic cultural and educational center, often called the “Agrahara of learning” and the birthplace of many saints, including Allama Prabhu, a prominent Veerashaiva saint.
