Festivities -- celebrate the soul of malnad --

Yakshagana

Yakshagana is a traditional folk theatre form combining dance, music, dialogue, and elaborate costumes. Popular across coastal and Malnad regions, it narrates stories from epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. Performances typically run through the night, featuring powerful storytelling, rhythmic drumming, and vibrant makeup. It’s one of Karnataka’s most distinctive cultural treasures.

Kerebete

Kerebete is a unique traditional fishing festival celebrated in parts of Shivamogga and the Malnad region. It is conducted when a lake or pond (kere) is partially drained, allowing locals to catch fish using traditional methods. The event has a communal and festive atmosphere, symbolizing teamwork, rural tradition, and harmony with nature. It often includes food stalls and local entertainment.

Rameshwara Temple Teppotsava

The Teppotsava (boat festival) at Rameshwara Temple is a traditional annual event held on the temple pond or nearby river. The idol of Lord Rameshwara is placed on a beautifully decorated float and taken around the water body, accompanied by devotional music, lights, and rituals. It signifies devotion and harmony, attracting large crowds of devotees and tourists alike.

Hindu Mahasabha Ganapati

This event celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi under the aegis of the Hindu Mahasabha, with great devotion and community participation. Large Ganapati idols are installed in public places, followed by music, bhajans, processions, cultural activities, and community feasts. The event concludes with the visarjana (immersion) of idols in local water bodies amid chanting and celebrations.

Kuvempu Rangamandira Events

Kuvempu Rangamandira, located in Shivamogga, is a prominent cultural auditorium named after the great Kannada poet Kuvempu. It regularly hosts a wide range of cultural programs, dramas, dance performances, literary gatherings, and music concerts. The venue is a hub for local artists and students to showcase talent and preserve Karnataka’s rich performing arts heritage.

Shivamogga Dasara

Shivamogga Dasara is celebrated grandly, similar to Mysuru Dasara, though on a smaller scale. The festival includes processions of Goddess Chamundeshwari, cultural performances, music and dance shows, decorated tableaux, and religious rituals. Streets are beautifully illuminated, and local artisans display handicrafts and traditional foods. It’s a ten-day festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil.

Ninasam Drama Series

Organized by NINASAM (Nilakanteshwara Natyaseva Sangha) in Heggodu village (near Sagar, Shivamogga district), this series is renowned across Karnataka. The Ninasam Drama Series features theatre workshops, drama performances, and seminars focusing on Kannada and world literature. It attracts theatre enthusiasts, artists, and scholars from across India and is a cornerstone of Karnataka’s cultural life.
