Nagara Fort

The Silent Guardian of Keladi’s Glorious Past.

About Us

The Nagara Fort, located near Hosanagara in Shivamogga district, is a 17th-century hill fort that once served as a prominent stronghold of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty. Originally called Bidanur Fort, it was an important military base and administrative center.

The fort is spread over a large hill, with remnants of palaces, water tanks, watchtowers, and granaries still visible. Notable features include:

  • Durbar Hall ruins – where the Nayakas conducted court.
  • Akka Thangi Honda (Twin Ponds) – a pair of water tanks within the fort.
  • Devagange Pond – a stepped tank with seven interconnected ponds, used for rituals.
  • Palace ruins and gateways showcasing the architectural legacy of the period.

Today, the fort is in ruins but retains a majestic charm, offering sweeping views of the Malnad landscape and a deep sense of history. It is a favorite for heritage enthusiasts, trekkers, and photographers.
