The Cherrapunji of South India

Agumbe is a serene rainforest village in Thirthahalli taluk, Shivamogga district, Karnataka. Known as the “Cherrapunji of South India” for its heavy monsoon rainfall, it is famous for its misty hills, evergreen forests, waterfalls, and the iconic Agumbe Sunset Point. Agumbe also houses the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), dedicated to king cobra conservation and rainforest ecology research.

Bhadra Dam

Bhadra Dam, also known as Lakkavalli Dam, is built across the Bhadra River near Lakkavalli in Tarikere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, about 60 km from Shivamogga. Constructed in 1965, it is one of Karnataka’s major multipurpose dams, providing irrigation, power generation, and drinking water supply.

Linganamakki Dam

Linganamakki Dam is a major hydroelectric project built across the Sharavathi River near Jog Falls in Sagara taluk, Shivamogga district, Karnataka. Commissioned in 1964, it is the primary reservoir for the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, one of India’s oldest and largest hydroelectric stations.

Sakrebyle Elephant Camp is one of Karnataka’s most unique eco-tourism destinations, located on the banks of the Tunga River, about 14 km from Shivamogga city. Managed by the Forest Department of Karnataka in collaboration with Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR), the camp is home to elephants that are trained, cared for, and rehabilitated.

Savehaklu Dam, built across the Chakra River in 1980, lies in Hosanagara Taluk of Shivamogga district. Surrounded by the lush Western Ghats, the dam is known for its striking square-edged embankments and calm reflective waters. The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari is a popular wildlife destination located about 10 km from Shivamogga city, on the Shivamogga–Sagar road. Established in 1988 and managed by the Karnataka Forest Department, it is a mini-zoo combined with an open safari park.
